It's a Vampire Thing (OTA?)
[OOC: This was intended as a fic to try and deal with Elijah's grief issues, and took place tonight at Fangtasia. Feel free to catch them outside headed back to the hotel, or for anyone who thinks their pup would have been in Fangtasia tonight to have heard something/know something happened, if not exactly what. :-D]

Elijah was sitting at a table in the corner, having killed a couple of bodies of whiskey. Coming back here was something like rubbing salt in a wound, he supposed, but it was where he knew and wasn't any worse than the bed he forced himself to lie awake in every night.

The staying in that bed was the forcing, not the laying awake. He tried to sleep; he wanted to sleep. In sleep there were dreams, and in dreams she was still there. And sleeping meant he wasn't tempted to head somewhere he...wasn't sleeping for a different reason.

Sometimes in the darkest moments of the night, he wondered why he bothered. It wasn't winning him any friends. But he'd never really had those, so it didn't much matter. He wasn't doing it because he wanted friends. He had given his word.

And there were some lines that he didn't know if his principles would survive if he crossed again.

So he had ventured out of the room that was haunted with too many memories and instead of hiding in one of the bars like he had been for weeks, he forced himself to go to Fangtasia.

...He still wasn't going to drink tequila.

* * *

Damon had been watching him since he came in, sprawled out in Eric's—his—throne-chair, one foot dangling over the arm negligently. This whole owning a bar thing had so far been pretty cool, but he was finding himself wary over needing to enforce some sort of...authority. Eric had just had it. He should have—his father always wanted him to—but he'd never quite mastered that leadership quality.

He had a feeling what he was about to do wasn't going to give him that much more, but maybe he could win an ally.

He'd been trying to stay out of Elijah's way since Lexi left. No, he hadn't killed her; no, he wasn't that guy; but people seemed to forget that in moments of extreme emotional distress and ultimately he didn't want to pick at whatever emotions Elijah was wrestling with. It hadn't come to a point, though, as Elijah had been avoiding Fangtasia.

But now, here he was, and here Damon was, and Damon knew what it was like to have the woman you love die. He'd gone through it twice, even if he'd deny now he ever loved Katherine. At twenty-three, he had. And he'd run a sword through his brother's heart and lived with that for centuries.

What could he say? He got Elijah, and he felt a lot of sympathy for what he was going through. The feeling of watching Elena fade away...he still got nightmares. At least he'd gotten to say goodbye.

Elijah hadn't.

He was going to be ten times an idiot for this.

* * *

Elijah looked up when the footsteps stopped by his table, and fixed Damon with a look of arrogant disdain. He knew Damon wasn't that Damon, wasn't the Damon who had cruelly and spontaneously ripped a light out of the world, but he wore his face, and if Elijah had known about the regime change (he clearly hadn't been listening to Jenna or Ric about any gossip), he wouldn't have come in.

He didn't want to give in to his baser impulses and kill the boy. In point of fact, at one point, he'd been rather fond of him. Damon got things, and he got Damon, and it was sort of a feel of what Klaus could have been, that he was never going to say aloud. He pretty much had to constantly fight his urge to kill his counterpart back home.

He had a feeling he wouldn't be able to fight that urge when he got back home.

Damon. Now really isn't a good time.”

The younger vampire gave him a level look, then tilted his head back toward the back. “It's the best time. Come with me.”

* * *

Half of Damon expected Elijah not to follow. Half of him hoped he wouldn't. A very large part of him didn't want to go through with this, but he knew what he'd need if he was Elijah, and someone not connected to it just wouldn't do.

Meaningless slaughter, in point of fact, was pretty meaningless at the end of the day.

What do you want?” Elijah had followed him all the way back to the storeroom. Damon brushed past him, shut the door, barred it. The Original arched an eyebrow.

Illyria's gone. I don't think anyone can get through that...except maybe River, but...she doesn't have super-hearing, so.”

Planning on being loud?” The faintest of smirks curved Elijah's lips.

Damon answered it, though the playful note that would normally lace his voice was absent. “I usually am.”

Elijah just shook his head.

I don't like repeating myself, Damon, and I'm not in the mood to be indulgent. What do you want?”

Damon leaned against the door and shrugged. “To help.”

How very kind of you.”

Don't be an ass.” He moved fast, sliding a hand to the back of Elijah's neck. “I've been there, okay. I get that it didn't happen this way in your world, but...I watched Elena die. I...watched my brother die, once upon a time. I almost had to watch it again. I know what it is to lose the person you love.”

I note that Elena is here.”

I didn't know she would be as I watched her die.”

Elijah measured him with a long glance, then nodded. “So...what? You want to tell me it will get better? To hang in there, love will find me again one day?”

Please. Do I look like the positive message guru?” Damon rolled his eyes. “It sucks. And it's unfair. And right now it hurts like nothing should ever hurt and make you live through on the other side. And you know that—you've lost people before. And maybe, yeah, it will get better someday, but that's shit. It doesn't matter right now. It doesn't help right now.”

Elijah was watching him with that same look, impassive and drawn, trying not to feel past the words.

What do you propose then?” He couldn't quite fathom it, if not another conversation where he felt like he was peeling back parts of his soul and leaving them to shrivel in the sun.

...Actually, that might be helpful.

Whatever he expected, it wasn't what came out of Damon's mouth.

Pretend I'm him.”

* * *

Elijah was staring at him like he'd lost his mind, so Damon quickly added. “Not completely. I mean, I have a feeling he might be toast the second you find yourself back in your world, and I'd prefer to not be repaid for my good dead by the loss of my heart or my head—they're both sort of spoken for—but...otherwise.”

Elijah was still staring. “Klaus made a similar offer.”

Yeah, well. I get the feeling your brother and I have a lot in common, but. He didn't kill your girlfriend.”

He'd killed Ric's girlfriend, but that really wasn't pertinent to this discussion. This wasn't about Klaus. Or Ric. Or Stefan. Or Elena.

Neither did you.”

I'm the closest you've got right now.” And he'd had to take a lot of verbal flack on his counterpart's behalf. This was the first time he'd been willing to offer it.

So...you let me do to you whatever I'd like to do to him, short of killing you?” Elijah hadn't pulled away from Damon's touch, and his voice was soft.

Basically.” Damon met his gaze, unflinching.

I could kill you, if I got...carried away.”

Damon swallowed, remembering well the things Klaus had done to him back home. “I know. Trust me...but I'm betting you won't.”

Why would you make that bet?”

Damon shrugged, giving him a wry smile. “I'm hoping you like me at least a little bit.”

Elijah's hand moved, sliding lightly over his skin in turn, almost lovingly. “You know what I can do to you, without killing you?”

Damon shivered, eyes darkening in memory. Pain, like he'd never known before. He remembered. And wondered just what he was signing up for. “Been there. Did that. I did mention I met your brother back home, and he...wasn't really pleased I declined to be his BFF?”

Elijah nodded, then. “I won't kill you.” He kissed him, softly. “Even if you beg me to.”

Damon almost gasped at the kiss, but a moment later, the pleased sound dissipated as Elijah's hand moved. Then it was all he could do not to scream.

* * *

Not killing Damon turned out to be rather difficult, but Elijah managed not to do that. He was grateful for the music, grateful for the din. By the time he was done, Damon had was a mess. He'd hurt—probably more than Lexi ever had.

He'd had stakes in the heart—it was fast, at least.

What he did to Damon wasn't.

They were both covered in blood—Damon's—as was much of the room. The boy had put up a far better fight than his counterpart, which Elijah appreciated. Beating a limp body was hardly satisfying, though by the time Damon collapsed, he was beyond being able to pull his punches.

He had to give the boy props though—he cried out a time or two, but he never screamed.

Elijah slumped against the door, exhausted but purged in some way. He'd been stuck in rapid cycling of emotion since he woke up to Lexi being gone, but the rage was the one thing he couldn't get a handle on. Always, before, he'd had an outlet. Here it was different.

His eyes were sticky, clotted blood catching here and there, and he was breathing hard. Damon moaned slightly on the floor where he lay in a pool of blood, and Elijah winced, just slightly. There was no way the boy would heal without blood. Even then, it was potentially a touch and go situation.

With a sigh, and a twinge of guilt, he moved over to him, crouching down. Reaching out, he rolled him over.

* * *

Moving was bad. Damon didn't want to move. He was fairly certain every bone in his body was broken, or at least had been at some point in the evening's entertainment.

Remind him never to be the one genuinely pissing Elijah off. The heart squeeze had truly terrified him.

He rolled as turned, though, half thinking he was in for more punishment, and ready to potentially cry uncle, but Elijah's fingers were soft on his face, instead.

Damon wasn't quite able to focus, but he felt the cool wrist against his, and he smelled the rich blood that wasn't his, and he latched onto it with a moan, drinking greedily. Everything knitting back together hurt almost as badly as it ripping apart had, but Elijah's blood was almost as good as a witch's. He shivered with pleasure as the pain crossed that threshold into something delicious and when Elijah tugged his arm back, Damon almost whimpered in disappointment.

Elijah's fingers were cool in his hair. “Much more, and I'm afraid I'll hurt one of your sweet patrons trying to make up for it.”

Damon waved a vague hand. “Wouldn't want to break security on you.”

The soft touches continued. “Heaven forbid.”

Damon managed to push himself up to sitting, but the room tilted. Elijah's arms slid around him to steady him, and he found himself leaning back against the Original. “Tell me that did something for you...”

A kiss to his hair, and he closed his eyes and sighed a little. “It helped. Thank you, Damon.”

Damon shrugged a little. “You okay if I just...pass out for a minute.”

He thought he heard Elijah's dry chuckle before he let the world slip away in a far more pleasant haze than it had before.

* * *

Elijah stayed where he was, cradling Damon while his blood worked its healing magic. He watched, fascinated, as wounds healed as if they never were, until only the pools and splatters of blood to show what had happened.

When Damon roused again, he was stronger, and sat up without problem, looking around with a wry smile. “Good thing I have a cleaning staff...”

This can't be much more than they're used to on a regular Friday night,” Elijah said, attempting humor for the first time since that morning.

Oh, yeah. I mean, after a party here, you should see the mess.”

I can imagine.”

Elijah stood, reaching out a hand to Damon to help him up. He kept hold of his hand once he was up. “You're all right?”

Damon nodded, giving him a bit of a smile. “I'm fine. Never better—Original blood, better than Adam's even...”

Adam?”

Oh...you haven't met our miracle Mr. Monroe?” Damon tsked, and slung an arm around Elijah. “Let's go back to the hotel and get changed, and I will tell you all about him...”

Can you just...leave on your first Friday night in power?”

Damon shrugged. “I'm the boss. I can do whatever I want. Besides...black may hide bloodstains, but I'm not heading out there smelling like this.”

Elijah winced, glancing down at himself, as well. “Out the back?”

So very out the back.”

Elijah shook his head a little and let Damon tug him out after him, feeling the first ghost of a smile. It wouldn't last forever, and he knew the grief would reassert itself, but for the moment he felt clean, whole, and like someday maybe it would be a little better.

And, maybe, both that and he would be all right.

Rebekah Mikaelson: watching ღ it's all so new at timesitconsumesher on January 14th, 2012 05:53 am (UTC)
"Well, this is an interesting sight." The lazy tone drifted out of the shadows as soon as the two of them stepped out the back door.

Stepping into view then, Rebekah casually studied her brother and Damon Salvatore as the scent of blood washed over her. They were far too chummy for Elijah to be killing the other vampire and she arched a brow as she waited for some kind of explanation.
Elijah Mikaelson: Fixing tiemanof_myword on January 14th, 2012 05:58 am (UTC)
Damon hadn't met Rebekah, had no idea who she was, even, though he could tell she was a vampire--and as powerful as the man next to him.

He arched an eyebrow at her in return, as Elijah straightened a bit a the sight of his sister, but didn't pull away from Damon.

"Rebekah..." Klaus was the one who wandered back in, blood covered, not him. He actually had...no idea how to address this.
Rebekah Mikaelson: smirk ღ it makes me better than youitconsumesher on January 14th, 2012 06:17 am (UTC)
It wasn't like it bothered her that he was covered in blood but she was definitely intrigued by it since it didn't usually happen.

"What? You're not going to tell me?" She asked, looking slightly amused even as she focused in on Damon with a smirk.

"So you must be Damon from the other world." She stepped forward.
Elijah Mikaelson: Vaguely exasperatedmanof_myword on January 14th, 2012 06:30 am (UTC)
"It's...complicated." Really, it wasn't, but his reasoning, and Damon's, was a little twisted and he realized that, and felt a faint flicker of shame for what he'd visited on the other vampire who hadn't done anything at all to him, ever.

Damon watched the exchange, frowning a bit, but nodded as she stepped forward, stepping away from Elijah a bit to offer his hand. "I am. And you are..."

"Rebekah," Elijah supplied. "My little sister."

Damon glanced back at him, sighed, then looked back at her, hand still extended. "Of course she is."
Rebekah Mikaelson: snarky ღ so that's what you have to say?itconsumesher on January 14th, 2012 06:33 am (UTC)
"Don't sound so dismayed." Rebekah reached to take Damon's hand, giving it a shake as she hoped she wouldn't have to stake him with a branch like she had done back home to the Damon she knew.
Elijah Mikaelson: [Damon] Maybe you'll listenmanof_myword on January 14th, 2012 06:41 am (UTC)
"No offense," Damon said, smile sardonic. "I haven't had the best of luck with your family back home."

Elijah flashed him an amused look. "And here I thought we were becoming such great friends..."

Damon made a face at him. "You I can live with. The question is which of you she favors..."

Elijah had been wondering that a bit himself.
Rebekah Mikaelsonitconsumesher on January 14th, 2012 07:13 am (UTC)
Rebekah wondered if there was a version of her back in his world and her eyes flickered to Elijah as the question came up as to whom she favored.

"Are there different sides?" She asked without answering the question, the smirk lingering as she arched a brow at them both. "Which one would make you feel better?"
Elijah Mikaelsonmanof_myword on January 14th, 2012 07:19 am (UTC)
"That depends on who you ask," Elijah murmured, and that flicker of torn loyalties tugged at him, as always.

"Well, your other brother kind of killed my best friend's girl, so we apparently don't like him." Honestly, Damon probably could, but for that. He, of all people, was not one to hold people responsible for what they'd done in a different world, but what they'd done in their own was fair game, he figured. "But this one's okay. Usually. Even if he could stand to loosen up a bit."

Elijah just gave him a look, vaguely amused.
Rebekah Mikaelsonitconsumesher on January 14th, 2012 11:57 pm (UTC)
And still there was no answer about who she favored even when Elijah mentioned it would depend on who was asked.

"Apparently? You don't sound so sure." She assessed Damon for a moment, studying him with a quiet gaze before she chuckled a little, glancing at Elijah. "We've been telling him that for centuries, trust me."
Elijah Mikaelson: Oh hellomanof_myword on January 15th, 2012 01:39 am (UTC)
Damon shrugged, and didn't say anything else. But for Jenna, he probably really could like Klaus. He understood him. But he couldn't go being friends with him, not and keep the friends he had.

Elijah rolled his eyes. "I am loose enough."

"Hardly," Damon rejoined.
Rebekah Mikaelson: smirk ღ it makes me better than youitconsumesher on January 16th, 2012 01:42 am (UTC)
"Since when?" Rebekah answered with a coy little smirk.
Elijah Mikaelson: Vaguely exasperatedmanof_myword on January 16th, 2012 02:35 am (UTC)
Elijah made a face at her. "Since always."

Damon looked highly amused at both of them. "We're going to finish the night with whiskey," he informed Rebekah. "Care to join us?"
Rebekah Mikaelson: smile ღ strangely pleaseditconsumesher on January 16th, 2012 02:39 am (UTC)
Rebekah had always loved teasing her brothers, which probably stemmed from being the only girl in a family of six siblings, and it was still fun even now.

"Really?" She responded as Elijah made a face at her. "Clearly I missed something."

Switching her attention back to Damon, she considered the invitation before nodding. "I'd love to."
Elijah Mikaelsonmanof_myword on January 16th, 2012 02:51 am (UTC)
"Clearly you weren't paying very good attention," Elijah rejoined. He knew he could be more...reserved than his siblings, but he liked to think he was capable of being fun.

He gave Damon a look as if to ask if he knew what he was getting into, but didn't countermand the offer. Truly, as much as he'd missed Rebekah, he was glad the younger vampire had made it.

Damon, for his part, had no idea the new Original had any history of any sort with his counterpart in their world, and just thought maybe a sibling who hadn't killed his roommate's girlfriend would be good for Elijah. "Excellent. My room, then."
Rebekah Mikaelsonitconsumesher on January 16th, 2012 07:16 am (UTC)
"It has been known to happen." Rebekah admitted but she knew Elijah could have fun when he decided to relax. Just usually not in the way that she did or Nic did.

"Lead the way then." She motioned for Damon to lead as she waited to fall in step with Elijah.
Elijah Mikaelsonmanof_myword on January 16th, 2012 07:36 am (UTC)
"More than once," Elijah shot back, looking amused.

Damon smiled slightly, mostly just pleased to see Elijah having enough spirit to spar with anyone playfully. He nodded slightly to Rebekah, heading for the hotel, while Elijah moved to trail along beside him and Rebekah.
Rebekah Mikaelsonitconsumesher on January 17th, 2012 11:17 pm (UTC)
"A slight exaggeration, I'm sure." She easily returned, flashing Elijah a cheeky little smile.

"So I hear you're actually from...Italy?" She started as she focused on Damon, glancing briefly at her brother as she tried to recall what he had told her about the people who came from a different reality of sorts. Of course, there had been a lot of information to process on her first night.
Damon Salvatore: Leather jacketprodigalsavior on January 18th, 2012 12:56 am (UTC)
Elijah refrained from rolling his eyes. Barely.

Damon nodded, glancing at her with a curious look. The panic Elijah's arrival had elicited had long since faded, and he was curious about the newest Original. "Florence, to be exact."

The accent was always faintly there, in the background, but he had traveled enough it wasn't pronounced anymore.
Rebekah Mikaelson: watching ღ it's all so new at timesitconsumesher on January 18th, 2012 02:58 am (UTC)
Rebekah nodded with a faint smile as h told her where he was from. She could tell he was older than the Damon she knew and that was intriguing as well. It also strengthened her curiosity of Stefan.

"Are we drinking something other than whiskey?" She asked, looking between the two of them. "Or are we actually limited to only feeding in Fangtasia?"
Elijah Mikaelson: Half smilemanof_myword on January 18th, 2012 03:11 am (UTC)
Elijah gave her an amused look at the question. "I don't think we'd intended to hunt. There's nothing to stop us, though. Outside of the club, the main rule seems to be not to kill them." Though he usually compelled anyone not automatically willing into being so--he wasn't sure what the rules about assault might be.

Damon shrugged a bit. "If you're hungry, we can. Though your brother and I might scare anyone we get near away..." What with the blood in their hair and soaking their clothes.
Rebekah Mikaelson: smile ღ strangely pleaseditconsumesher on January 18th, 2012 03:33 am (UTC)
She wrinkled her nose faintly at the idea that they couldn't kill those they fed on because what fun was that, really? That was probably just the bloodthirsty hunter in her though. "And what happens if you do kill someone?" She asked, wanting to know how they could actually be punished. It wasn't like she couldn't just compel someone into forgetting.

Clearly she was still learning about the village.

"No, it's fine. If you have blood bags that is." She didn't sound at all pleased with the idea of drinking from a blood bag but it would make do in a pinch.
Damon Salvatore: Leather jacketprodigalsavior on January 18th, 2012 03:49 am (UTC)
Damon frowned a little. "I don't think any vampire has done it, but one guy who caused trouble and killed a girl ended up buried alive. And others have been confined, even when they seemed to have supernatural powers." The idea of being confined in any way was enough to keep Damon in line, even if he hadn't promised Elena no more killing.

Elijah had never had as much of a need to kill humans as his siblings. He tended to take his rage more out on his own kind who stood in his way.

"I do," Damon said with a nod, though he made a bit of a face. "Not a lot, but they're handy on occasion." Now that he couldn't feed on Elena.
Rebekah Mikaelsonitconsumesher on January 18th, 2012 06:11 am (UTC)
Rebekah wasn't pleased with the idea that she could be punished for killing someone but she was sure she could curb some urges if she needed to. Possibly.

She had lasted for a little while in Mystic Falls without killing after all.

"Good, I haven't found where we're supposed to get them."
Elijah Mikaelsonmanof_myword on January 18th, 2012 09:11 pm (UTC)
"They don't just appear in your fridge?" Elijah asked, surprised. They had always seemed to for Lexi.

"You can get them at the clinic," Damon supplied. "If they aren't." Appearing in the fridge. Cleaning out the clinic of blood they might need wasn't the best plan either, but the village so far had seemed to ensure there was enough around.
Rebekah Mikaelsonitconsumesher on January 18th, 2012 09:39 pm (UTC)
"Hmm, I haven't looked." She admitted with a careless little shrug.

But she nodded as Damon informed her that she could get blood bags at the clinic if she needed to. Her preference would always be to get it right from the source which meant that she would always go to Fangastia first if she was hungry but at least she knew she had a back up.
