Needing a distraction. [OTA]
Steve needed a change of pace ever since Selina had left without a word. He sort of felt this weirdly empty space in his chest and he wasn't sure what the hell that meant, but he wasn't about to dwell on it either. She was gone, and he'd have to move on, just like everything else in his life. This change of pace meant that he'd actually leave his room today to make an appearance in town, in uniform. That uniform usually consisted of his patented khakis, combat boots, a polo shirt, and his badge with sidearm.

He walked aimlessly around town, occasionally stopping to look in a store or two. Subconsciously he was waiting for the right person to walk by and catch his attention, get his mind off things.

Danny Williams: Beers with Stevebooks_em on March 5th, 2013 01:38 am (UTC)
"Wow." Danny had seen him from down another street and changed direction to meet his friend. As he drew closer, the miserable expression on Steve's face was evident.

"What? They take away your pass at the shooting range?"
[LCDR] Steven J. McGarrett: ♦ betrayal.calledmechamp on March 5th, 2013 01:40 am (UTC)
There's that classic 'Irritated Steve' face, Danny. Tread lightly. He crosses his arms over his chest and shakes his head.

"No. Thankfully not." This is Steve trying to avoid the issue, even though it's obviously evident by the look on his face.
Danny Williamsbooks_em on March 5th, 2013 01:43 am (UTC)
He blinked and took in Steve's new expression. Danny stopped walking once he caught up with Steve.

"Okay, I'll bite." Something was obviously the matter. "What's wrong?"
[LCDR] Steven J. McGarrett: ♦ close; talking to you.calledmechamp on March 5th, 2013 01:44 am (UTC)
"Selina left, without a word. Room empty."

He felt like a teenager, and wanted to kick something. Hard. Steve should be used to being left behind by now but it still sucked when it happened.
Danny Williams: Somberbooks_em on March 5th, 2013 01:50 am (UTC)
Steve's news caused Danny's expression to shift. He crossed his arms over his chest and frowned gently. "That sucks, man. I'm sorry."

Nothing was fun about losing someone you cared about. Danny knew that intimately.
[LCDR] Steven J. McGarrett: ♦ danno; you need help.calledmechamp on March 5th, 2013 01:53 am (UTC)
"And the thing that sucks the most is that I actually let myself fall for her."

What a mistake, right? Steve was immediately regretting that decision. What the hell was he doing falling for a woman who was a self-labeled criminal anyways?! Was he nuts?

"It's all aloha anyways...How are you? How's Grace?"
Danny Williams: Cock Head to Sidebooks_em on March 5th, 2013 01:58 am (UTC)
"I'm good. Grace is good." Danny could talk about Grace all day and she was starting to make friends, too, but he wasn't about to let Steve off the hook so easily.

"But it's not all aloha. Trust me, because I've been there. It sucks and it's allowed to suck, but you can't get caught up blaming yourself. Selina was, if nothing else, supremely good looking... albeit a criminal, but it's not like we don't know a few of them already." Kamekona was their friend, after all.
[LCDR] Steven J. McGarrett: ♦ worried to death.calledmechamp on March 5th, 2013 02:04 am (UTC)
Dammit. Steve could never get out of a conversation with Danny, only because the man knew him so well and his tactics of diverting the topic to something else worth talking about...like Grace.

He groaned and rubbed the bridge of his nose. This headache was too much, but it was mostly from him over thinking too much about things. Steve disliked these moments.

"I just...hadn't been in a relationship, or whatever it was we had, for a very long time." Which was true. Steve was sort of slow when it came to developing long lasting loving relationships. It came from having such a dangerous job scaring women away for so long.
Danny Williamsbooks_em on March 5th, 2013 02:31 am (UTC)
"And so, what? You think because you're all G.I. Joe guy you can't be any good at them?" His eyebrows lifted up in surprise. He knew Steve wasn't good with touchy-feely stuff sometimes, but this was an unexpected turn of events.
[LCDR] Steven J. McGarrettcalledmechamp on March 5th, 2013 02:47 am (UTC)
Steve was getting uncomfortable with this conversation, which was indicated by him shifting feet and grasping and ungrasping his holstered sidearm but he knew Danny wouldn't let him out that easily.

"Well, yeah. That's exactly what I think. Women don't stick around when your house gets shot up by the Yakuza or you get stabbed in prison..." He shrugged, "I haven't had experience with a stable, long term relationship. That's all." He may or may not be getting defensive.
Danny Williamsbooks_em on March 5th, 2013 02:52 am (UTC)
Being a cop wasn't that much difference, but it wasn't like Rachel had stuck around either. Danny wasn't going to bring that up.

He glanced at Steve's figeting, but then his gaze returned to his friend. "What about Catherine? She's been hanging around and seems to think your whole 'blow things up' attitude is attractive."

[LCDR] Steven J. McGarrett: ♦ what is going on?calledmechamp on March 5th, 2013 03:04 am (UTC)
This whole conversation made him feel like he was sixteen again. He felt shy, he felt angry. All of these emotions. He wasn't quite sure what to do with them honestly, so he just kept fidgeting.

"We weren't really a couple per se. I liked her, sure, but I wasn't about to commit." He paused. "I don't have commitment issues though." It was almost as if he was trying to convince himself of that.
Danny Williamsbooks_em on March 7th, 2013 02:34 am (UTC)
"Right." He looked at his friend for a moment, then thumbed in the direction behind me. "I was going to go get a beer. Want to keep me company?"

Danny had been headed elsewhere, but it looked like a beer was better right now for Steve.
[LCDR] Steven J. McGarrett: ♦ black tank top.calledmechamp on March 7th, 2013 03:51 am (UTC)
Steve should probably take that offer. He could use a beer, or two with his partner.

"Sure. That sounds great."
Danny Williamsbooks_em on March 7th, 2013 03:56 am (UTC)
"See? Right there, a commitment." He grinned, then turned with a gesture of 'come on' and started for the bar.

"Look, babe, women and relationships. They're complicated. And sometimes even the good ones go bad, but, what's the other option? Never having one?" Danny liked women far too much for that option.
[LCDR] Steven J. McGarrett: ♦ strong jawline.calledmechamp on March 7th, 2013 04:01 am (UTC)
Why was he getting advice from Danny right now about relationships? He was so confused. But now that he thought about it...Danny did have more experience with this sort of thing.

"That's true, and while I'm stuck here I'd like to actually experience an actual relationship for once." Though he'd be lying if he said that experience was on the top of his list of 'things to do'.
Danny Williamsbooks_em on March 7th, 2013 04:19 am (UTC)
Danny was not going to bring up how he went on a date recently with a rather hot, British archaeologist.

"So then, you know, the Selina thing kind of sucked, but that shouldn't stop you from trying again." He reached for the door when they got to the bar.

"Besides, have you see the women here? It's like the village only lets the hot ones in."
Bella Cullen: Thoughtful.motheraboveall on March 5th, 2013 01:38 am (UTC)
And that would be Bella, sparkling slightly in the daylight -- the weather was just right that the sparkle wasn't full-on, thankfully, because as much as she loved what she was, she didn't always feel like explaining the damn sparkle.

She'd been meandering around town, since she didn't have to work, and she'd seen the man a few times. Part of her wanted to say something to him, but she wasn't very good with that social interaction thing sometimes, a holdover from her human days. She might have the beauty and grace and reflexes of a vampire, but she had the personality quirks of a human thank you very much.

Finally, though, she said something. "Something on your mind?" she asked gently.

If there was any time to catch the Navy SEAL off-guard it was when he was wrapped up in his own thoughts -- which honestly didn't happen often, not for this analytic thinker. Steve was startled a tad when she actually said something to him, and when he noticed her sparkle...Although, it was becoming easier and easier to deal with different people here.

"Ah." Steve managed a nervous smile, and chuckle. "Lots of things, actually. Have we met?" He extends a hand down in her direction, "Steve McGarrett."
Bella Cullen: Numb.motheraboveall on March 5th, 2013 01:44 am (UTC)
"Bella Cullen," she replied with a smile, reaching out to shake her hand. "And no, we haven't. Though I've seen you around a few times -- in general and today. I've been walking around myself," she explained.

"That explains it. I've seen you around too when I'm on my shifts." He shook her hand gently before letting it go. Steve was a gentleman, or at least he tried to be. Years of military service made him forget his manners at times. "Where are you from, Bella?"
Bella Cullen: Lost and alone.motheraboveall on March 5th, 2013 01:48 am (UTC)
"Forks, Washington," she replied. "It's a tiny little town, nothing much to recommend it. But it's home now and I love it."

As comfortable as she might be in the village, it'd never be home.
[LCDR] Steven J. McGarrett: ♦ island spirit.calledmechamp on March 5th, 2013 01:51 am (UTC)
Oh, Steve knew that feeling. More than anyone would ever know.

"Can't say I've ever been to Forks, but I have been to Washington." He rubbed the back of his neck. Small talk was not his forte but it seemed to be going pretty well. "I'm from O'ahu, Hawaii. I definitely miss it."
Bella Cullen: Communicating with Renesmee.motheraboveall on March 5th, 2013 01:55 am (UTC)
"Oh, Hawaii must be beautiful," Bella said. "I've never been, but I've always wanted to go."

Don't worry, Steve, she's not very good at small talk, either.

"And I think a lot of people here miss it back home, wherever home is." Though she knew that some people didn't particularly miss it for one reason or another. And she supposed she didn't miss the home so much as she missed the people.

"It's very beautiful. I grew up there, and wouldn't want to live anywhere else...Well, if I had the choice."

Steve really missed home though, he was so homesick he could feel it ache in his chest. O'ahu made him feel at peace with his life, in a weirdly hectic way.

"I think that's true." He nodded slowly, crossing his arms over his chest. "Are you here in town alone?" He only asked because he was alone at first until Danny, Grace and Kamekona showed up and this place felt a little bit more like home with them here.
Bella Cullenmotheraboveall on March 5th, 2013 12:14 pm (UTC)
Bella shook her head. "No, I'm not," she said. "My daughter is here, but from a time where she's grown up and not the small child I know her as. And someone else from our world is here, but from my past. So not alone, just mostly."

She shrugged.

"But as long as I have my daughter, I'm fine with that." Of course, she'd be happy to have Edward in the village, but she could survive quite contently with just Renesmee and even Bree.

"Oh. That's nice." Steve wondered what his life would be like with a daughter, or a son. He was nearing forty, fast, and didn't even have a stable girlfriend.

Steve nodded slowly.

"How old is she here? And what's her name?"
dannolovesmedannolovesme on March 5th, 2013 01:52 am (UTC)
There was no one better at getting your mind off of things than a nine year old in a Hello Kitty shirt and big pink jacket flinging herself at you.

Honestly, try not to smile.

"Uncle Steve!"

How could this big lug of a guy not smile at that? A big smile came to his face when he picked her up and spun her around.

dannolovesmedannolovesme on March 5th, 2013 02:03 am (UTC)
"Good," she giggled, and held on tight as he swung her. For a naturally quiet little girl she wasn't subdued at all as she grinned at him.

He'd looked sad though, and now he looked... well, less sad anyway.

"Howzit?" She's obviously been spending time with Kamekona.

Even being in the village as long as she had been, she hadn't quite given up the habit of wearing her badge on her belt. Even though she didn't work as a cop here, old habits died hard.

She was walking to the coffee shop when she noticed the glint of his badge in the sun. She slowed to a stop in front of him with a smile.

"The village is crawling with cops, huh?"

"Yes ma'am. Seems like it." Steve approach was always kind, although a bit heavy handed. In his line of work in the Navy, he hardly worked around women.

When he noticed her badge on her belt, but he didn't recognize her face from the force in town, he gestured. "Are you a cop in town too? I must've been holed up in my room for too long. Missing some new faces."

Hawaii was probably the best place to be a cop, minus the fact that it was small and people knew exactly who a arresting officer was -- which meant Steve had plenty of revenge hits.

"Not too long. About five months, actually. How about yourself?"
